How many financial advisers are there in Germany?
Germany has an estimated 285,000 active financial advisers in 2025 to 2026, within a range of 240,000 to 330,000 (reliability C, emable Germany Intelligence package version 2026-08-27). The official DIHK registers hold 178,810 insurance, 41,388 financial investment, 58,014 mortgage credit and 375 fee-based investment registrations in Q3 2026 (reliability A). Those rows are records, not people, and they are not additive across licence types.

The answer
Germany has an estimated 285,000 active financial advisers in 2025 to 2026, within a range of 240,000 to 330,000. The estimate carries reliability C. It comes from the emable Germany Intelligence package, version 2026-08-27. The package combines DIHK register rows, AGV Banken and Bundesbank data with an overlap-adjusted activity model.
The number is not a licence count. German registers publish rows per licence type, and one person or firm can hold several. The gross total of 278,587 rows across the four main GewO categories is therefore not a count of unique entities. The package estimates about 212,000 unique registered entities, in a range of 190,000 to 235,000, reliability C.
Bank advisers are a separate layer. They work under institutional licences and do not appear in the intermediary registers. The package puts them at a midpoint of 115,000 (95,000 to 136,000). Non-bank active advisers sit at a midpoint of 170,000 (145,000 to 195,000).
The numbers
Every figure behind this answer sits in the key figures table above, with its value, unit, period, source and reliability grade: A official statistics, B reconciled from published sources, C modelled estimate, D indicative.
How the number is built
The official rows come first. DIHK publishes the count of registrations per GewO paragraph, and those rows are reliability A. They are records, not people.
The package then removes overlap. Many intermediaries hold §34d and §34f or §34i together, so the four rows are non-additive. An overlap proxy yields the unique entity estimate, reliability C, because no German register publishes a cross-licence unique denominator.
Activity is the third step. Registration does not mean current advisory work, and bank employees are missing from the registers entirely. The activity model adds a bank layer from AGV Banken and Bundesbank data and discounts inactive registrations. The output is a midpoint with a range, never a single hard number.
emable's own EU register aggregate tells a different story for Germany. It holds 12,982 Germany records at coverage level thin, because only some registers are ingested so far. Both figures are true. One counts ingested register records; the other estimates active people from a model.
What it means for distribution
A head of distribution planning recruitment, a broker pool assessing reach or a fintech sizing a channel should work with three numbers, not one. Use the official rows when the question is about licences. Use the unique entity range when the question is about firms and individuals to address. Use the active adviser range when the question is about capacity in the market.
The ranges matter for planning. A plan built on 330,000 active advisers assumes over a third more capacity than one built on 240,000. Treat the midpoint as a working assumption and revisit it as the package updates.

Related questions
- Why is the adviser count a range and not a single number?
- No German register publishes a cross-licence unique denominator, and bank advisers work under institutional licences outside the registers. The package therefore models overlap and activity and reports a midpoint with a range at reliability C.
- Can I add the DIHK register rows together?
- No. One person or firm can hold §34d, §34f and §34i registrations at the same time. The gross total of 278,587 rows is not a count of unique entities; the overlap-adjusted estimate is about 212,000 (190,000 to 235,000, reliability C).
- Why does emable's EU register aggregate show only 12,982 Germany records?
- The aggregate counts ingested register records, and Germany is at coverage level thin because only some German registers are ingested so far. The 285,000 figure is a modelled estimate of active people from a separate package. Both are true and measure different things.
Methodology and limitations
Official DIHK register rows per GewO paragraph come first and carry reliability A as counts of records. An overlap proxy removes cross-licence duplication to estimate unique registered entities, because no German register publishes that denominator. An activity model built from DIHK, AGV Banken and Bundesbank data then adds bank advisers and discounts inactive registrations, producing a midpoint with a range at reliability C. The result is not a licence count and not a headcount from any single source.
